Isaiah 43:14-44:5

¹⁴Thus says the Lord,
    your Redeemer, the Holy One of Israel:
^(A)“For your sake I send to Babylon
    and ^(B)bring them all down as fugitives,
    ^(C)even the Chaldeans, in the ships in which they rejoice.
¹⁵I am the Lord, your Holy One,
    the Creator of Israel, your King.”

¹⁶Thus says the Lord,
    ^(D)who makes a way in the sea,
    a path in the mighty waters,
¹⁷who ^(E)brings forth chariot and horse,
    army and warrior;
they lie down, they cannot rise,
    ^(F)they are extinguished, ^(G)quenched like a wick:
¹⁸^(H)“Remember not the former things,
    nor consider the things of old.
¹⁹^(I)Behold, I am doing a new thing;
    now it springs forth, do you not perceive it?
^(J)I will make a way in the wilderness
    ^(K)and rivers in the desert.
²⁰The wild beasts will honor me,
    ^(L)the jackals and the ostriches,
^(M)for I give water in the wilderness,
    rivers in the desert,
to give drink to my chosen people,
²¹    the people whom I formed for myself
^(N)that they might declare my praise.

²²“Yet you did not call upon me, O Jacob;
    but ^(O)you have been weary of me, O Israel!
²³^(P)You have not brought me your sheep for burnt offerings,
    or honored me with your sacrifices.
I have not burdened you with offerings,
    ^(Q)or wearied you with frankincense.
²⁴You have not bought me sweet cane with money,
    or satisfied me with the fat of your sacrifices.
But you have burdened me with your sins;
    you have wearied me with your iniquities.

²⁵“I, I am he
    ^(R)who blots out ^(S)your transgressions for my own sake,
    and I will not remember your sins.
²⁶Put me in remembrance; ^(T)let us argue together;
    set forth your case, that you may be proved right.
²⁷^(U)Your first father sinned,
    and ^(V)your mediators transgressed against me.
²⁸Therefore ^(W)I will profane the princes of the sanctuary,
    and ^(X)deliver Jacob to utter destruction
    and Israel to reviling.

Israel the Lord's Chosen

44 “But now hear, ^(Y)O Jacob my servant,
    Israel whom I have chosen!
²Thus says the Lord who made you,
    ^(Z)who formed you from the womb and will help you:
^(AA)Fear not, O Jacob my servant,
    ^(AB)Jeshurun whom I have chosen.
³^(AC)For I will pour water on the thirsty land,
    and streams on the dry ground;
I will pour my Spirit upon your offspring,
    and my blessing on your descendants.
⁴They shall spring up among the grass
    ^(AD)like willows by flowing streams.
⁵^(AE)This one will say, ‘I am the Lord's,’
    another will call on the name of Jacob,
and another will write on his hand, ‘The Lord's,’
    and name himself by the name of Israel.”

Israel's Guilt and Punishment

3 ^(A)Hear this word that the Lord has spoken against you, O people of Israel, against the whole family that I brought up out of the land of Egypt:

²^(B)“You only have I known
of all the families of the earth;
^(C)therefore I will punish you
for all your iniquities.

³“Do two walk together,
    unless they have agreed to meet?
⁴Does a lion roar in the forest,
    when he has no prey?
Does a young lion cry out from his den,
    if he has taken nothing?
⁵Does a bird fall in a snare on the earth,
    when there is no trap for it?
Does a snare spring up from the ground,
    when it has taken nothing?
⁶^(D)Is a trumpet blown in a city,
    and the people are not afraid?
^(E)Does disaster come to a city,
    unless the Lord has done it?

⁷“For the Lord God does nothing
    ^(F)without revealing his secret
    to his servants the prophets.
⁸The lion has roared;
    who will not fear?
^(G)The Lord God has spoken;
    who can but prophesy?”

⁹Proclaim to the strongholds in ^(H)Ashdod
    and to the strongholds in the land of Egypt,
and say, “Assemble yourselves on ^(I)the mountains of Samaria,
    and see the great tumults within her,
    and ^(J)the oppressed in her midst.”
¹⁰“They do not know how to do right,” declares the Lord,
    ^(K)“those who store up violence and robbery in their strongholds.”

¹¹Therefore thus says the Lord God:

^(L)“An adversary shall surround the land
and bring down^[a] your defenses from you,
and ^(M)your strongholds shall be plundered.”

¹²Thus says the Lord: ^(N)“As the shepherd rescues from the mouth of the lion two legs, or a piece of an ear, ^(O)so shall the people of Israel ^(P)who dwell in Samaria be rescued, with the corner of a couch and part^[b] of a bed.

¹³“Hear, ^(Q)and testify against the house of Jacob,”
    declares the Lord God, ^(R)the God of hosts,
¹⁴“that on the day I punish Israel for his transgressions,
    ^(S)I will punish the altars of Bethel,
and ^(T)the horns of the altar shall be cut off
    and fall to the ground.
¹⁵^(U)I will strike ^(V)the winter house along with ^(W)the summer house,
    and ^(X)the houses of ivory shall perish,
and the great houses^[c] shall come to an end,”
declares the Lord.

Spiritual Blessings in Christ

³^(E)Blessed be ^(F)the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing ^(G)in the heavenly places, ⁴^(H)even as he ^(I)chose us in him ^(J)before the foundation of the world, that we should be ^(K)holy and blameless before him. Thanksgiving and Prayer

I Am the Bread of Life

²²On the next day the crowd that remained on the other side of the sea saw that there had been only ^(A)one boat there, and that Jesus had not entered the boat with his disciples, but that his disciples had gone away alone. ²³Other boats from Tiberias came near the place where they had eaten the bread after the Lord ^(B)had given thanks. ²⁴^(C)So when the crowd saw that Jesus was not there, nor his disciples, they themselves got into the boats and ^(D)went to Capernaum, seeking Jesus.

²⁵When they found him on the other side of the sea, they said to him, ^(E)“Rabbi, when did you come here?” ²⁶Jesus answered them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, ^(F)you are seeking me, not because you saw ^(G)signs, but because you ate your fill of the loaves. ²⁷^(H)Do not work for the food that perishes, but for ^(I)the food that endures to eternal life, which ^(J)the Son of Man will give to you. For on ^(K)him God the Father has ^(L)set his seal.” ²⁸Then they said to him, “What must we do, to be doing ^(M)the works of God?” ²⁹Jesus answered them, “This is the work of God, ^(N)that you believe in him whom ^(O)he has sent.” ³⁰So they said to him, ^(P)“Then what sign do you do, that we may see and believe you? ³⁵Jesus said to them, ^(U)“I am the bread of life; ^(V)whoever comes to me shall not hunger, and whoever believes in me shall never thirst. ³⁶But I said to you that you have seen me and yet do not believe. ³⁷^(W)All that ^(X)the Father gives me will come to me, and ^(Y)whoever comes to me I will never cast out. ³⁸For ^(Z)I have come down from heaven, not to do ^(AA)my own will but ^(AB)the will of him ^(AC)who sent me. ³⁹And ^(AD)this is the will of him who sent me, ^(AE)that I should lose nothing of ^(AF)all that he has given me, but ^(AG)raise it up on the last day. ⁴⁰For this is the will of my Father, that everyone who ^(AH)looks on the Son and ^(AI)believes in him ^(AJ)should have eternal life, and I will raise him up on the last day.”
